Microblading Aftercare: A Week-by-Week Healing Guide

Microblading, also called eyebrow embroidery or hair-stroke brows, is a semi-permanent technique that deposits pigment into the upper layers of the skin in fine, hair-like strokes. The result is fuller, natural-looking brows that save you time every morning. Great results depend on two things: a skilled artist and good aftercare. Knowing what is normal during healing helps you relax and protect your new brows while they settle.

Why Aftercare Matters

Each stroke is a tiny, controlled opening in the skin. While your skin heals, the pigment settles into place. Picking, soaking or rubbing the area can pull pigment out and lead to patchy results, while keeping the area clean and dry helps the strokes heal crisp and even. Always follow the specific instructions your artist gives you, as they are tailored to your skin.

The Healing Timeline

Days 1 to 3: bold and dark

Right after your appointment your brows will look sharper, darker and thicker than the final result. Mild redness, tenderness or slight swelling is common. Gently blot away any lymph fluid with a clean tissue as advised by your artist.

Days 4 to 10: tightness, itching and flaking

Your skin starts to repair itself, and the brows may feel tight or itchy and begin to flake. This is completely normal. Resist the urge to pick or scratch, as this can lift pigment along with the flakes.

Weeks 2 to 3: the faded or “ghosting” stage

Once the flakes fall away, the strokes can look much lighter, and some may seem to disappear. Don’t worry. New skin forms over the pigment and makes it look softer for a while, and the colour gradually returns as the skin settles.

Weeks 4 to 6: the true result

By now your brows are close to their final colour and shape. Your artist will usually schedule a touch-up appointment around six to eight weeks after the first session to fill in any lighter strokes and perfect the shape.

Microblading Aftercare Dos and Don’ts

  • Do keep your brows clean and dry, and follow your artist’s cleansing routine.
  • Do sleep on your back if you can, and use a clean pillowcase.
  • Do apply any aftercare balm exactly as instructed, using a thin layer.
  • Don’t pick, scratch or rub the brows while they flake.
  • Don’t apply makeup, sunscreen or skincare products directly on the brows until they have healed.
  • Don’t swim, use saunas or steam rooms, or do sweaty workouts for about ten days.
  • Don’t expose your brows to direct sun or tanning beds while healing.
  • Don’t have facials, peels or brow tinting on the area until your artist says it is safe.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

Results typically last around one to three years, depending on your skin type, lifestyle and sun exposure. Oily skin tends to fade pigment faster, while drier skin often holds it longer. A yearly colour refresh keeps your brows looking crisp. Protecting your brows with sunscreen once healed and avoiding strong exfoliating products on the brow area will also help them last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does microblading hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as light scratching. Discomfort is usually mild and short-lived.

How long is the appointment?

Plan for around two hours, which includes consultation, brow mapping, shaping and the procedure itself.

Is the touch-up necessary?

Yes. Everyone heals differently, and the touch-up is where your artist perfects the colour and fills in any strokes that faded.
