How to Prepare for Your Permanent Makeup Appointment

Permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique that uses fine needles to place pigment into the upper layers of the skin, creating long-lasting colour for the brows, eyelids and lips. Done well, it means waking up with defined brows, a soft eyeliner or naturally tinted lips, with no smudging and no daily touch-ups. Because it is a skin procedure, a little preparation goes a long way. Following these steps helps your session go smoothly, keeps you comfortable and gives your pigment the best chance to heal evenly.

Popular Permanent Makeup Treatments

  • Brows: adds shape, density and definition for natural-looking, fuller brows.
  • Eyeliner: a subtle lash-line enhancement or a more defined liner that never runs.
  • Lip colour: soft, natural tint that defines the lip line and adds colour.

Two Weeks Before Your Appointment

  • Book a consultation. Talk through the shape and shade you want and bring photos for reference.
  • Avoid tanning and sunburn on your face. Healthy, calm skin holds pigment better.
  • Pause strong skincare on the area, such as retinoids, chemical peels and exfoliating acids, unless your artist advises otherwise.
  • Skip facials, Botox or fillers near the treatment area for a few weeks before, and let your artist know about any recent cosmetic work.
  • For lip colour: if you have ever had cold sores, ask your doctor whether preventive treatment is right for you before your appointment.

48 Hours Before

  • Avoid alcohol, as it can increase bleeding and affect how pigment settles.
  • Limit caffeine on the day of your appointment to help you stay relaxed.
  • Do not tint or wax your brows, and avoid lash extensions or lash tinting before eyeliner work.
  • If you take blood-thinning medication or supplements, speak with your doctor first. Never stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

On the Day

Arrive with a clean face and no makeup on the treatment area. Wear comfortable clothing and, for eyeliner, glasses rather than contact lenses. Your artist will review your health history, map and measure the shape, choose the right pigment for your skin tone and make sure you are happy with the design before starting. Most clients describe the sensation as light scratching or vibration.

Who Should Wait?

Permanent makeup is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and people with certain medical conditions, skin conditions in the treatment area or a tendency to keloid scarring should talk to their doctor first. Always share your full health history with your artist.

After Your Session

Expect the colour to look darker and bolder for the first few days before softening as it heals. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid picking any flakes, stay out of pools, saunas and direct sun, and follow your artist’s aftercare instructions exactly. A touch-up visit several weeks later perfects the colour and shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does permanent makeup last?

Results usually last several years, gradually fading over time. Periodic colour refreshes keep them looking their best.

Can I wear makeup after the procedure?

Avoid makeup on the treated area until it has fully healed.

Is permanent makeup the same as microblading?

Microblading creates fine hair strokes in the brows with a hand tool, while permanent makeup can also be used on the eyelids and lips and may use different tools and techniques depending on the look you want. Read our microblading healing guide to learn more.
